What is 3D Bone Densitometry?
3D Bone Densitometry is a safe and painless scan that checks the strength and density of your bones. It’s also called a DEXA scan or QCT scan. This test uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone loss, especially in the spine and hips. It helps doctors detect conditions like osteoporosis, even before symptoms begin.
Why Might You Need This Test?
Your doctor may suggest a 3D Bone Densitometry if you:
- Are at risk of osteoporosis or have already been diagnosed
- Have a family history of bone loss
- Have diabetes, thyroid, kidney, or liver problems
- Are taking steroids for a long time
- Have lost more than 1 inch of height
- Have had a fracture from a small fall, sneeze, or cough
- Have unexplained bone pain or weight loss
It’s also useful to track bone health over time, usually every 1 to 2 years. For patients on steroids, it may be done every 6 months.
What Happens During the Test?
You lie down on a padded table. A scanner passes over your body—usually focusing on your lower spine and hips. You’ll be asked to stay still. Sometimes, you may need to hold your breath for a few seconds. The scan itself takes only 10 to 15 minutes. There’s no fasting needed. Wear comfortable clothes without metal zips, hooks, or buttons.
How Long Does It Take?
Total visit time: Around 1 hour. Scan time: 10 to 15 minutes.
Do I Need an Appointment?
Walk-ins are welcome, but we recommend calling us on 8869906990 to check availability before you come.
Do I Need to Bring Previous Reports?
Not required, but if you have any, bring them along for better comparison.
Any Allergies or Precautions?
There’s no injection or contrast dye used, so there’s no allergy risk. This scan is non-invasive, and you’ll be ready to go home right after.
