What is an X-ray?
An X-ray is a quick, painless test that creates images of the inside of your body using a small amount of radiation. It’s commonly used to check bones and joints but can also help assess soft tissues like the lungs or abdomen. X-rays are one of the most frequently used diagnostic tools in medicine.
Why are X-rays Done?
- Bone Health: X-rays help detect fractures, dislocations, infections, and arthritis. They’re also useful for checking bone healing after an injury or surgery.
- Chest Health: They’re often used to detect lung infections (like pneumonia or tuberculosis), heart enlargement, and signs of chronic lung conditions.
- Dental Care: Dental X-rays show tooth decay, bone loss, and impacted teeth. They're also used for treatment planning, like implants or extractions.
- Abdomen Health: X-rays help detect kidney stones, gallstones, or digestive blockages.
- X-ray Guided Procedures: Real-time X-ray guidance helps doctors during procedures like biopsies, joint injections, catheter placements, or inserting pacemakers and stents.
What to Expect During an X-ray
You'll be positioned in front of an X-ray machine while a technician takes the image. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly to avoid movement. It usually takes only a few minutes. You’ll need to remove any metal items like jewellery or belts.
Preparation & Aftercare
Wear loose clothing or a gown if needed. Let the team know if you’re pregnant. Most X-rays need no special prep, but for guided procedures, follow any specific instructions given.
After a standard X-ray, you can continue your normal activities. For guided procedures, rest and follow your doctor’s aftercare advice.
