What is an Abdominal X-ray?
An abdominal X-ray is a quick and painless test. It shows images of organs like your stomach, liver, intestines, and spleen.
If the scan focuses on the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, it is called a KUB X-ray.
Why is it Done?
Your doctor may suggest an abdominal X-ray to:
- Find the cause of stomach pain
- Check for vomiting, bloating, or indigestion
- Detect kidney stones or gallstones
- Look for any blockage in the intestines
- Spot a hole (perforation) in the digestive tract
- Locate any object that may have been swallowed
Before the Test
Please keep these things in mind:
- Pregnant or think you might be? Let your doctor know. X-rays are usually not done during pregnancy.
- Wear loose, metal-free clothes – avoid zips, belts, or jewellery.
- Empty your bladder before the test.
- Avoid antacids or barium tests done recently – they may affect your scan.
- Have an IUD? Please inform our team before the scan.
What Happens During the Test?
- You may be asked to lie on a table or stand.
- The X-ray machine is placed over your belly area.
- You’ll need to stay very still and may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds.
- Several images may be taken from different angles.
- The test is quick and does not cause pain.
Time Required
Scan time: 10 to 15 minutes
Total visit: Around 1 hour
After the Test
- No rest needed – you can eat and go about your day as usual.
- There are no side effects.
- Your doctor will receive the results soon.
