What is a Chest X-ray?
A chest X-ray is a fast, painless test that gives clear images of your lungs, heart, and chest bones. It helps doctors find out what’s going on inside your chest when you're feeling unwell. It’s commonly used to check for breathing issues, infections, or injuries.
Why You Might Need a Chest X-ray
Your doctor may suggest a chest X-ray if you have:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- A lasting cough or chest pain
- A chest injury
- Suspected lung infection or pneumonia
- Signs of fluid in the lungs
- Heart-related concerns
- Suspected lung cancer or blockage
How to Prepare
Usually, no special preparation is needed. But here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Pregnant or unsure? Please tell us. We may need to delay or change the scan for your safety.
- Wear loose clothes. You may be asked to change into a gown.
- Remove jewellery. Metal can interfere with the images.
- No fasting or medication changes are required.
What Happens During the Test
- You will be asked to stand or sit in front of the X-ray machine.
- The technician will guide you into a position for best results.
- You’ll be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds while the image is taken.
- The whole process is quick and usually painless.
- Let the technician know if you feel any discomfort during the process.
