What is a CT Scan?

A CT scan, or Computed Tomography scan, is a simple and painless test. It uses X-rays and a computer to create clear images of your body. It helps doctors check organs, bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues.

What Does a CT Scan Show?

CT scans are helpful in many situations. Your doctor may suggest it to:

  • Check for tumours or cancers
  • Look for infections or abscesses
  • Find internal injuries after an accident
  • Examine bones and joints
  • Study the brain for stroke, seizures, or other conditions
  • Assess heart disease or blood vessel blockages
Types of CT Scans

We offer:

  • CT Plain: No dye used. Good for a general view.
  • CT with Contrast: A dye is used to highlight specific areas.
  • CT Abdomen & Pelvis: Focuses on your internal organs.
When Should You Avoid a CT Scan?

CT scans are generally safe. Still, in some cases, special care is needed:

  • Pregnant? Let your doctor know. Scans may be avoided to protect the baby.
  • Kidney issues? Contrast dye may need to be avoided.
  • Allergic to iodine? Please inform us beforehand.
What Is Contrast Dye?

Some CT scans need contrast dye. It helps show certain parts of the body more clearly. The dye may be given by mouth (oral), through a vein (IV), or through the rectum (enema), for bowel scans. If oral contrast is used, you’ll need to wait 45–60 minutes before the scan.

How to Prepare for the Scan

For plain CT scans: Eat and drink as usual. Take your usual medications.
For contrast CT scans: Do not eat for 4 to 6 hours before the scan. Inform us about your medications and any allergies.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Tell your doctor. If you're nursing and taking contrast, store milk ahead of time. Avoid breastfeeding for 24–48 hours after the scan.

What Happens During the Scan?

You’ll change into a hospital gown, remove jewellery or any metal items, and lie on a table that moves into a large, round scanner. The scan is quick. You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds. A technician watches you from another room and stays in touch through an intercom. The test is not painful. You’ll be done in a few minutes.

How Long Does It Take?

Plain CT scan: Around 20–30 minutes. CT with contrast: Around 1.5 to 2 hours (including waiting time).

What to Do After the Scan

You can eat and drink normally. Drink more water to flush out the contrast dye. You can return to your usual activities right away.

Reports and Results

You will get your report within 24 hours. In urgent cases, reports can be ready in 3–4 hours.
