What is a DTPA/EC Renal Scan?

A DTPA or EC Renal Scan is a test to check how well your kidneys are working. It shows how blood flows into the kidneys and how well urine drains out.

A small amount of radioactive tracer is used, which is completely safe.

Doctors recommend this scan to find out if there’s any blockage, poor function, or other kidney problems.

Why is it Done?

  • To check how each kidney is working
  • To see if there’s a blockage in urine flow
  • To monitor kidney function after surgery or treatment
  • To diagnose conditions like hydronephrosis or renal artery narrowing

Before the Scan

Here’s how you can prepare:

  • Eat and drink as usual. No fasting needed.
  • Drink lots of water before the test – it helps the scan work better.
  • Take your usual medicines, unless your doctor says otherwise.
  • Avoid diuretics (water pills) on the day of the scan, unless advised.
  • Tell your doctor if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have allergies.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes. You might be asked to change into a gown.

Things to Carry

  • Doctor’s prescription or referral
  • Past reports like kidney blood tests, scans, or ultrasounds
  • A list of medicines you are taking, especially for blood pressure
  • Recent Serum Creatinine report (within the last 4 weeks)
  • A water bottle to stay hydrated
  • One person to assist you, if needed

What Happens During the Scan

  • You arrive at the centre and complete registration.
  • A nurse will check your history and explain the scan.
  • You’ll be asked to drink about 1 litre of water over an hour.
  • You can use the washroom if needed.
  • A small needle is placed in your vein to give the tracer.
  • You’ll lie down on the scan table.
  • The scan begins and takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Sometimes, you may be given a medicine called Lasix to help assess drainage.
  • If required, delayed images may be taken after some time.
  • The scan is painless. You just need to stay still while the camera captures images.

After the Scan

  • You can eat, drink, and take your regular medicines.
  • Drink extra water to help flush out the tracer through urine.
  • Avoid close contact with young children and pregnant women for 12–24 hours.
  • You may need to wait for a short time after the scan in case more images are needed.
  • The scan results will be sent to your doctor.

Important Notes

  • The amount of radiation used is very small and safe.
  • If you’re breastfeeding, express milk beforehand and avoid feeding for 24 hours.
  • The tracer leaves your body within a day – mostly through urine.
  • If you feel unwell after the scan, inform the medical team.

This scan helps doctors make better decisions about your kidney health – safely, clearly, and without discomfort.
