What is a HYNIC-TOC Scan?

A HYNIC-TOC Scan is a special imaging test used to detect neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). These tumors can grow in the intestines, pancreas, or lungs. The scan uses a small amount of radioactive tracer that targets specific tumor cells.

It helps your doctor:

  • Detect NETs
  • Plan treatment
  • Monitor progress
  • Decide if targeted therapies like PRRT will help

The scan is painless and safe.

Why You May Need This Scan

Doctors usually recommend this scan if:

  • You've been diagnosed with or suspected of having a neuroendocrine tumor
  • You're being considered for PRRT (a special targeted therapy)
  • Your doctor needs more detail than other scans can offer
Before the Scan – How to Prepare
  • No heavy meals for 4–6 hours before the scan (you may drink water)
  • Continue regular medicines unless your doctor says otherwise
  • If you're on somatostatin analogs (like octreotide), ask your doctor when to stop
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Inform us in advance
  • Wear loose, metal-free clothes
  • Drink water before and after the scan
What to Bring With You
  • Doctor's prescription
  • Any recent scan reports (CT, MRI, blood tests)
  • A list of your medications and supplements
  • Previous treatments or surgery notes, if any
  • A bottle of water
  • Home-prepared food or snacks for after the scan
  • Only one friend or family member should accompany you
How Long Does It Take?

The whole process takes about 4 to 5 hours:

  1. You'll receive a small injection of the tracer
  2. You rest for 3 hours while the tracer spreads in your body
  3. Then we take scan images — this takes around 20 minutes
  4. In some cases, we may ask you to return the next day for a second scan
What Happens During the Scan?
  • After your arrival, we'll check your prescription
  • A nurse will insert a small cannula (thin tube) in your vein
  • You will get the tracer injection
  • After resting, you'll lie down for the scan — no pain, just stay still
  • Our nuclear medicine specialist will check the images
  • You may go home after a short observation
After the Scan – What You Should Know
  • You can eat, drink, and take medicines as usual
  • Avoid close contact with pregnant women and children for 12–24 hours
  • Drink lots of water — it helps flush the tracer out
  • You may go back to your normal routine the same day
  • Your doctor will receive the results in a few working days
