What is HSG?

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a special X-ray test for women who are facing difficulty in getting pregnant or have had repeated miscarriages. It helps check the shape of the uterus and whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked. The test uses a type of live X-ray called fluoroscopy to capture clear images of the uterus and tubes.

Why is it done?
  • You are unable to conceive
  • You’ve had multiple miscarriages
  • There’s a need to check for any blockage or abnormal shape in the uterus or tubes
How to prepare

The test is usually done within 10 days from the start of your period.

  • It cannot be done if you have a pelvic infection or untreated STD.
  • You may be asked to take a mild painkiller before the test to reduce discomfort.
  • Tell your doctor if you might be pregnant.
  • Wear loose clothes and avoid jewellery or anything metallic.
  • Inform if you have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place.
During the test
  • You will lie on a padded table.
  • The doctor will gently clean the cervix and insert a thin tube.
  • A special dye is passed through the tube.
  • X-ray images will be taken as the dye flows through your uterus and tubes.
  • You may be asked to stay still and hold your breath for a few seconds.
  • The doctor might take images from different angles, so you may need to change positions.
What reports should you bring?
  • Your complete medical history and prescription.
  • A recent Serum Creatinine report (within 4 weeks) to check your kidney health, especially if contrast dye is used.
How much time does it take?
