What is PSMA PET-CT Scan?
PSMA PET-CT is an advanced scan to detect prostate cancer. It helps check if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The results help your doctor decide the best treatment for you.
What to Know Before Your Scan
1. How to Prepare
- Do not eat for at least 2 hours before the scan.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothes.
- Do not wear any jewellery.
2. What to Carry
- Your doctor's note or prescription for the scan.
- Your complete medical file and past prescriptions.
- Reports of any past scans or PET-CTs (including PSMA PET-CT).
- CD copies of earlier scans, if available.
- Your recent serum creatinine report (preferably done on the same day at our lab).
- Bring only one person with you.
How Long It Takes
- Total time: About 3 to 4 hours
- Rest time after injection: Around 1 hour
- Scan time: Around 15 to 30 minutes
Step-by-Step: What Happens During the Scan
1. Registration and History
- You'll register at the reception.
- A team member will talk to you about your health history, medicines, past treatments, and reports.
- Feel free to ask questions at this stage.
2. Document Check
- We'll check your older scan CDs and reports.
- We will also need your latest blood sugar and creatinine reports.
- If not done already, you can get them done at our lab before the scan.
3. Getting Ready for the Scan
- A nurse will give you a gown to wear and ask you to remove any jewellery.
- A small tube (cannula) will be inserted into your vein.
- If blood tests are needed, they will be done using the same cannula.
- You may be asked to drink a medicated liquid, depending on the scan type.
4. Radiotracer Injection
- A special tracer is injected through the cannula.
- You'll rest in a quiet room for about an hour so the tracer spreads inside your body.
5. The Scanning Room
- A technologist will take you to the scanning room and explain everything.
- You'll lie on a table that moves through the scanner.
- The scan usually takes 15–20 minutes.
- In some cases, we may need a few more images.
- A contrast dye might be used if needed. This depends on your blood reports.
6. After the Scan
- A nurse will help you out of the scanning room.
- In some cases, a delayed scan may be needed.
- Once your doctor reviews the scan and gives the okay, you can eat, drink, and take your usual medicines.
Aftercare Tips
- You can eat and take medicines as usual after the scan.
- Stay at the centre for another 30–40 minutes for observation.
- Try not to stay too close to young children or pregnant women for the rest of the day.
- The tracer leaves your body naturally through urine and stool in 10–12 hours.
- Drink plenty of water to help flush it out faster.
