What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasonography, or ultrasound, is a safe, painless, and non-invasive test. It uses sound waves to create real-time images of the organs and tissues inside your body. Since it doesn't use radiation, it is safe for everyone, including pregnant women.

Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound to:

  • Check organs like the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and pancreas
  • Monitor pregnancy (fetal development, due date, and possible issues)
  • Evaluate blood flow (such as with Doppler ultrasound for the heart and vessels)
  • Examine injuries to muscles, tendons, and joints
  • Guide surgeries or biopsies (helps doctors be more accurate)
  • Investigate lumps or pain (such as cysts or tumors)
Preparation for the Test

What you need to do before the test depends on the area being scanned:

  • Abdomen/Pelvis: Fast for 6-8 hours (you can drink water).
  • Bladder/Kidneys: Drink 4-5 glasses of water 1 hour before the test for a full bladder.
  • Pregnancy or other areas: Usually no special preparation needed.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Bring any previous ultrasound reports if available.
What to Expect During the Test
  • You will lie on an exam table, and a gel will be applied to your skin.
  • A handheld probe is moved over the area. It might feel like slight pressure, but it’s painless.
  • You may hear swishing sounds if Doppler ultrasound is used to check blood flow.
  • The test usually takes 15-30 minutes.
  • Afterward, the gel is easy to wipe off.
How Long Will It Take?

Total visit time: 30-45 minutes

Actual scan time: 15-30 minutes

Results: Often available immediately or within 24 hours if more detailed analysis is needed.

After the Test
  • No recovery needed – you can resume normal activities right away.
  • If contrast is used, drink water to flush it out.
  • Your doctor will review the results and discuss any next steps if needed.
Additional Information
  • Safe for all ages, including pregnant women and newborns.
  • No risks – ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure with no radiation.
  • Types of ultrasounds include:
    • Abdominal (for liver, gallbladder)
    • Pelvic (for ovaries, uterus, prostate)
    • Doppler (for blood flow in the heart/legs)
    • Musculoskeletal (for joints, muscles)
  • If you have any open wounds or infections in the area being scanned, please inform your technician beforehand.

Ultrasound is a quick, painless, and highly effective test to diagnose many conditions. If you have any questions, feel free to ask before your appointment!
