What is a Whole Body PET-CT Scan?
A Whole Body PET-CT scan combines two powerful tests—PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography). It gives detailed 3D images of your organs and tissues. This scan doesn't just show what things look like—it also shows how they are working.
Doctors often use it to:
- Detect cancer or other serious conditions
- Check how far a disease has spread
- Monitor the effects of treatment
- Plan surgeries or radiation therapy
How to Prepare for the Scan
To get clear results, a little preparation is needed. Please follow these simple instructions:
- Fasting: Don't eat for 5–6 hours before the scan. You can drink plain water.
- Diabetes medication: Can be taken 10–12 hours before the scan.
- Blood sugar check: Test your blood sugar on the same day. If it's over 200 mg/dL, we may need to reschedule.
- Exercise: Avoid any heavy activity or workouts for 24 hours before the scan.
- Pregnancy: If you're unsure about being pregnant, take a test. PET-CT is not usually done during pregnancy.
- Breastfeeding: Express milk before your visit. You can safely resume feeding 24 hours after the scan.
- Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Avoid jewellery or metal objects.
What to Bring with You
To make your scan smooth and accurate, carry the following:
- Doctor's note or referral for the scan
- Your complete medical file and list of medicines
- Previous scan reports (PET-CT, CT, MRI, X-ray, etc.)
- Recent blood test reports (Creatinine and Blood Sugar)
- One friend or family member to accompany you
- A home-cooked meal to eat after the scan
How Long Does It Take?
Plan to stay for 3 to 4 hours at our centre.
- Preparation and resting time: 1 to 2 hours (after tracer injection)
- Scan time: 15 to 25 minutes
What Happens During the Scan?
Here's what to expect on the day:
- Registration & check-in: Our team will confirm your details, go through your medical history, and answer any questions.
- Getting ready: You'll change into comfortable clothing and remove metal items.
- Tracer injection: A small injection of radioactive tracer is given through a vein. We may take blood samples from the same needle to avoid extra pricks.
- Resting time: After the injection, you'll rest quietly in a special room for about an hour.
- Scan time: You'll lie on the scan table while the machine takes pictures. It's painless and you'll be guided throughout.
- Contrast dye (if needed): In some cases, a dye may be used to improve the images. This depends on your kidney function.
- Completion: Once the scan is done, our doctor will check if more images are needed. If not, you'll be free to change and eat.
After the Scan
- You can eat, drink, and take your regular medicines.
- Please stay for a short observation (around 30 minutes).
- Avoid close contact with children and pregnant women for the rest of the day.
- The tracer leaves your body through urine and stool in 10–12 hours. Drink lots of water to help flush it out.
